Meet Rusty

I saw a rusty cornea today.  Not rusty as in out of shape, but actual rust particles embedded in the cornea.  The transparent tissue on the front of the eye that covers the pupil and iris is one of the most sensitive tissues in the body.  When a piece of metal gets lodged in the tissue and creates a rust ring it can be a very uncomfortable experience. Symptoms of tearing, light sensitivity, blurry vision and pain would make a grown man wince all from one little speck that was smaller than the tip of a pin.  Luckily this patient called our 24 hour answering service and I was able to meet him at the office, remove the offending metal and clean up the remaining rust. In about 20 minutes, with a promise that he would always wear safety glasses, he was on his way home and feeling much better.
